About the Artist

Baptista carving a figure in his studio

Baptista is an Angolan-born sculptor based in Newcastle who specialises in traditional African wood carving. With over 25 years living and working in the UK, his work explores themes of identity, migration and cultural memory through intricately carved wooden figures.

Working primarily in hardwood, Baptista shapes each piece by hand using a blend of traditional and contemporary tools, finishing in natural waxes and oils that let the grain speak. His figurative work — seated, contemplative forms and standing figures — sits alongside carefully observed studies of African wildlife, from elephants and buffalo to delicate single animals.

His practice is rooted in techniques passed down through generations and refined over a lifetime of making. Symbolic storytelling runs through every piece: the sculptures are less about likeness than about feeling — the weight of memory, the pull of home, and the quiet dignity of the figures he draws out of the wood.

Recently, Baptista has established a small studio practice with the support of Triangular CIO, where he is developing a new body of work for exhibition. He is also the founder of the Refugee Art and Heritage Group C.I.C., a community interest company celebrating and preserving refugee and migrant art, culture and heritage across the Northeast of England. He remains, at heart, primarily self-taught — guided by deep roots in African sculptural tradition and a patient, exploratory relationship with his material.

Artist Statement

“I carve to remember. Each figure I draw out of the wood carries something of where I come from and the long road that brought me here. The grain already knows the shape — my work is to listen, and to set it free.”
